The 17 year old, who attends Rocky Mountain High School, said although he enjoys cross country skiing in the Poudre Canyon, downhill skiing is his favorite. "There is no similarity between Egypt and Colorado," Mories said, with a grin. Though students live in different homes and are spread among area schools, they said they all experienced a culture shock coming to America. Aqsha Karbela, a Muslim from Indonesia attending Fort Collins High School, said she was taken aback by all the "PDA" public displays affection by her American peers. Karbela, who wears a hijab (a scarf that covers her hair and neck) with a smiley face button pinned near the bottom, said the freedoms American teens have are in stark contrast to those in her culture socially and academically.

"In my country we can't choose our classes," she said. In the United States most high schools allow students to choose classes and some even allow students to schedule periods off or attend colleges and trade schools for a portion of the year. State Department Youth Programs Division Officer Astrida Levensteins, whose office heads funding for the YES program in Washington D.C., was on hand to meet the students Thursday. "It (the exchange program) allows American exposure from other countries and allows students to become acquainted with American cultures," Levensteins said. "We consider these students diplomats." All too often foreign teens get the wrong idea about American culture from movies and other pop-culture media, she said.

Carroll agreed. "The YES program is a great way to address the misunderstandings that exist between American and Muslim countries," she said. When Thompson polled the class about the meaning of the word "volatile," one American student suggested "angry." The foreign student body diplomatically waited to learn it meant something that could evaporate into thin air much like Muslim and American relations if it weren't for such programs, Levensteins said. www.coloradoan.com Meadville Antique Study Club, Meadville Medical Center Auxiliary, Crawford County Historical Society, YWCA, Meadville Country Club and the Iroquois Club.
